• I've been trying to make this post for a while now, but I got all sick, so it's taking forever. The problem with like never getting sick is that when you do get sick you get sick as shit. But I'm coming around.
• The other day I drew a little comic strip I'm calling "Bird Turds." Would you maybe like to see it? (I also drew this other thing for it, but I don't know what for, really.)
• Fantagraphics finally got on their grind and revamped their website. It wins now, and you can finally order directly from them. FancyNerds of the world, be stoked.
• I'm pondering this potential move, you know, to Austin. I think if were to base my decision solely on the music that's coming out of that place, I would already live there.
Spoon - "Black Like Me"
White Denim - "Shake Shake Shake"
The Octopus Project - "All the Friends You Can Eat"
• The Rai Child is reading over my shoulder at the moment, eating his gross food. Breathin' all hard and smackin'. The shit's disgusting. I would remind/implore him to bring it the fuck back already, but I'm tired of saying it.
Dear Viva Voce, I don't want to sound like a dick. Because I'm flattered. Really. But, um. The next time you make a song about me, you could go a little easier on the jangle-pop and go for more of a "brooding menace" kind of vibe. Cheers, TDH
• Okay. And that said, I think that the wintertime is the time to chill the fuck out 'cause it's boring.
That's "I Do Have Weapons" by Mogwai, by the way.
• So. Um. About that. I got this poll here. There's a whole, long-winded thought process behind its inclusion, but I'll spare you the particulars.
• When you're stuck, kind of, at your parents house, you end up watching the most bizarre movies ever because they have a gigantic TV and you can't just take Jacuzzi baths all day.
• Speaking of television, If I had my own channel, it would look a great deal like this Grupthink poll. I know I mentioned it there, too, but in the interest of being thorough, I can't figure out how to embed that old-ass Flipmode Squad video for "Cha Cha Cha." It would totally also be in heavy rotation on my fantasy TV station.
• From the Not Sayin'; Just Sayin' File: We here at at Curtains For You, Kid are at our parents' house, as you may well know, where there is always an insane glut of celebrity gossip magazines. And maybe we're connecting dots that shouldn't be, but in light of recent events, the Breaking News out of Hiebradond just got a little weird.
• Two books I want: 111 (nsfw), and the new Walton Ford joint.
• Every once in a while you get the impression that maybe Nick Catchdubs is a little too awesome, and gets more intrawebs love than anyone else ever, and you wonder how in hell he ever got to that position, but then he drops a Justice remix with Wale on it and it all makes sense again.
• The thing about this article - apart from its inclusion here officially making this CFY,K entry a little heavy on the celebrity news - is that at first you're like "Man. Sucks for the old Hulkster." And then you think about how it's all you're going to hear the Bobo Howard Sterns talk about for a while. But then you do a double take, read the shit again, and say "New American Gladiators?! YES!"
• The lady Mz. Higginbotham has a new, completely pro-fee-essional gig these days, with an office, she says, that is big enough for a ping-pong table. I can't imagine when she'd find the time to actually play ping-pong (The Heroic Sport of Heroes), though. Maybe she could spend all day training with a robot. Then she might have a shot at one day beating me. (I wonder if the Robo Pong 2040 is in anyway related to R.O.B.)
• I am under the impression that Stephen Colbert is running for president entirely for the lulz, and entirely in character. Is there like a legitimate term for when the joke-thing begins to have an effect on the actual thing?
• Winsor McCay may well be the best that ever did it.
• The White StripesLomo joints are really, really awesome. (Though I can't decide whether the Jack or the Meg one is the most awesome.) But I can't imagine a set of circumstances under which I'd actually buy one.
• I remember during high school, I think I ate a Twix and drank a Dr. Pepper - I know what you're thinking. Shut up. - every single day, and I thought it was the single greatest soft drink / candy bar combination ever conceived by man. But then the other day I hit upon some new shit, which is actually some old shit, but has, regardless, supplanted the old situation. "The American Classic," the best snack ever (I used to have a roommate that would laugh hysterically every time anybody said "snack" or "snacks"), consists of one eight ounce Coca-Cola in the glass bottle and one regular milk chocolate Hershey Bar. But then, to top it all off, you chase it with one Marlboro cigarette, because otherwise you feel like you're a little kid in the 1950's and you want to dress up like a cowboy and sit only inches in front of a black and white television.
• I figured I should put up something for you to listen to while you wait, with baited breath, for the new Border Disaster episode, which should really be happening any day now. It's this Rolling Stones demo / outtake thing where they play a Rice Krispies jingle or something, and invent punk rock in the process.
• So I was talking to S. Higginbotham the other day, while she was en route to her new home. I told her this story about how I saw this thing happen a little while ago that was so, like, obviously and directly symbolic that I could never really use that experience for the basis of, say, a piece of fiction, because it would come across as forced and dumb. Luckily, "forced and dumb" is pretty much the order of the day here in the blogosphere, so. Anyway. You might haver heard of this tragedy the of involving the deaths of nine firefighters. It was pretty horrible. In the aftermath of this, somebody started putting up these billboards around town that said "Not Forgotten," and I thought they did a really decent job on them. I was, no kidding, touched and impressed when I first saw one. About a a month after, I was sitting in the driv-thru at Wendy's, and the person in front of me was taking forever, and the whole time I was watching a guy cover up the "Not Forgotten" billboard with a real estate advertisement. I guess it was only ever a matter of time, but watching it happen was kind of a powerful thing. It was like the kind of sentimentality that Norman Rockwell leaves out.
• If you're me and you spend a ton of time doing stuff in front of your computer, but then part of your "process" involves long stretches of just kind of sitting there and thinking, you end up just kind of naturally coming across entertaining shit on teh intrabutts. (If you're me, you turn that experience into a blog.) And sometimes, if you're lucky, you get to witness \ participate in epic threads. (We tried to call in the Raichile for a one-time airstrike, but no dice.)
• The dudes from Baker make sunglasses now. Isn't it weird how you see Greco play guitar more than skate these days? The guitar is a cruel mistress, man.
• In other skate news, if you read that 16 things about the Gonz thing from last time, you maybe saw a little bit about Steve Rocco. Now there's a movie being made about him, and I, for one, can't wait to not see it in theaters and wait for the DVD to come out.
• I'm not the biggest fan of the song in the following video. It's a little too "blog-rock" for me. But just on a basic level, you've gotta respect the level of nerd-work that went into this thing:
• I've been holding onto this link since forever, and I don't even know why. I guess I couldn't ever get it to fit into any of the more narrative-style posts here on CFY,K. Anyway. Here's an old classic: Sixteen things you didn't know about The Gonz.
• Another day, another couple of Diplo remixes of current favorites. Discobelle rules for stuff like that.
• One of my other favorite blogs, PalmsOutSounds, now has like an additional splinter blog called Attorney St, which I didn't find out about until I read my otherother favorite blog. The "blogosphere," by the way, looks like this.
• Now, I'm not the biggest fan of electronic music in the world, but I'm no hater of the bleep blorp, either. I know what a good pop song sounds like, and the new Justice single is one, and where can I get one of these tee-shirts? Hypercolor, you have been outmoded.
• Everytime I say something's going to be the best shit ever, it turns out sucking. So I will only say that I'm really excited for tomorrow, it being a Tuesday and all.
• The picture is a little busy, I know. But, like the man says, what do you want for nothin', right? Anyway. I've been trying, lately, to get right, because I have to be in shape for when I run the "Camdonian Deth-cathlon." I made a little mix of hard ass rap songs that make me want to fight dudes and lose, so I figured I'd share it with you. (Right click and save as or whatever.)
• Have you guys been watching VBS? Man, as much as I hate to jump on Vice's dick, you should be. The Jason Dill Epicly Later'd thing alone is worth the price of admission (it's free).
• If I could, again, figure out how to do those expandable "click here to read the rest of this post" posts, then that damn Strokes video wouldn't start playing every time you came to CFY,K. I mean, I wouldn't have put it up here if I didn't like it, but come the fuck on. (Update: Never mind, I changed it. But I still want to be able to do expandable posts.)
• I think Higginbotham should challenge this chick to a stitch fight.
• The most epic Grupthink thread ever. I only go there anymore to reread this kind of crap since Raichile resigned to write a book about secret societies and encryption software even though he never finished reading that book Cryptonomicon.
• Hey, how come mimes get such a bad rap in comedy? I might have, in my life, come across, like, three total mimes. What's going on with mimes?
• I have been recently overwhelmed with new music that I really like, which is an invigorating feeling. I have, therefore, decided to issue the CFY,K Official Early Picks for The Best Song of 2007. They are as follows:
Rehab, by Amy Winehouse, which is exactly the song that should have come out this year. Me and Thee Famousperson were talking last year about how this sort of thing couldn't have been far off, since the best box set evar came out. (That's right, Nuggets. I said it.) Winehouse and producer Mark Ronson get shit absolutely right, ending up with pitch-perfect pop awesomeness.
Imagine, by Lil Wayne, is a mixtape cut, during which the incredibly-prolific Weezy F. Baby raps over the same beat from Nas' If I Ruled the World. This track earns its spot based on this one moment where, if this was the "original," Lauryn Hill would come in on the chorus, but it's not the original, and we're left with Wayne simply stating, voice drenched in nihilism, "Get high, screw the world." And it's the best rap line I've heard since "I need vegetables \ Is weed vegetables?"
New York I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down, by LCD Soundsystem. This song's placement on this list may owe significantly to the idea that I have lately been obsessed with songs that are excellent night-enders. This song is an excellent anything-ender.
What do you guys think? Certainly, according to you, I have left something out.
• Thee Famous Person, in the midst of meeting up with old friends and Grupthink denizens, was, apparently, at the same show as the Status Ain't Hood guy.
• I have been dying to play a little Man Cup lately. Also, I caved today on my new FFF (that's "Fast Food Free") lifestyle. That Big Bacon Classic had no idea what it was in for. Afterwards, though, I felt the dirty guilt.
• I went and saw 300 last night. Epic? Yes, it was epic. Somewhat uncomfortable due to the costume department's reliance on leather briefs? Yes, it was somewhat uncomfortable due to that. (Raichile, for the record, has been searching for leather briefs for some time now. To match his harness.)
• I'm trying to get a post up today before the bottom falls out the sky. Things outside are looking rough, ladies and gentlemen. I been hearing about hail, man.
• The boy Jush came up yesterday on a solo surprise mission. Some Radocasting ensued despite vicious intermittent accordion attacks. (We also saw a guy get straight punched in the balls. The incident literally stopped traffic.)
• In related news: y'all heard about Pacman Jones, right? And all that nonsense he got himself into at a titty bar? Well. Luckily, Enormasaurus, the world's greatest make-believe band, got together last night and recorded an a capella interpretation of the incident. Kind of. Here it is. It rules.
• From the "In Case You Missed It" File: Byron Crawford, who may well be the hardest working man on the internet, keeps a little stash house of those mercurial items that show up and then get promptly deleted from the internets. That Joe Rogan VS Carlos Mencia thing? He's got you! You need to hear that new Guns 'N Roses joint? Say no more, man.
• Although, if everything goes according to plan, this shit will only effect my life for like a month. What's that? Oh, yeah. There's totally a plan. Kind of.
• Shamanzo has accused your boy, in the past, of only liking things anymore involving female lead singers. In response to this, I offer the following: a new M.I.A. video, a longish Amy Winehouse profile (don't sleep!), and some exciting news regarding Cocorosie.
• Bacon aside, Rainuts came up for a visit this weekend.
• Apparently, I don't know anything about anything. Jush won the 2007 RWRR Brett Sucks Challenge. The Corndogs became The Cowboys. And then they imploded. And then they disintegrated. And then, just to add insult to injury, For Better or For Worsesimply will not die. (Memo to Watterson: You have proved your point. I want it back.)
• Also: What Daytrotter does is so good that I want to do everything they do and not even feel bad about it.
• The Good, The Bad and The Queen is so good you may - may - be able to expect a review of it soon. But we here at CFY,K are still waiting for all the reviews of that Anvil Rabbitt EP to come in. (Oh yeah. That's totally still happening.)
• Can you believe that I took the above picture of a thing that really exists in the world? Well, I did. More than that: it's the John Henry Dick Wing of the Small Building.
• Lately, monumental developments have been taking place. For instance, my first issue of The Fader came in the mail today. My devotion to that magazine is obnoxious.
• And then: Can't find mixtapes where you live? Don't want, really, to drop money you don't have on them anyway? Lil' Wayne hears you. (Is anyone this good over the course of so many mixtapes?)
• I watched Transporter 3 the other night. Which was a like a midday snack to hold me over until they decide to make the Thanksgiving Dinner that will be Transporter 3.
• Look at this. Witness the stupid glory. Know that you love it. (It's fine.) Then play it again every single time your phone rings. Only then will you know the extent of my weird-ass dilemma.
• I don't really like dance music. I cannot speak French. And yet, I don't give a fuck. Fluokids has a new picture of a goodlooking woman with every post. I bet they're just saying sexy French shit all the time. I love them.
